What does it mean to write from a landscape shaped by rock and earth, by the weight of what endures? Wyl Menmuir returns to Dyski for a writing retreat built around his new book The Spirit of Stone, the final part of his trilogy exploring our relationship with place. Where The Draw of the Sea took readers to the water's edge and The Heart of the Woods into the forest, this retreat journeys into the landscapes of rock, stone and earth. From mountains and caves to stone circles and quarries, from Neolithic carvings to the buildings we live and work in, stone is everywhere beneath us and around us, shaping not only our landscapes but our imaginations and the ways we live together. This retreat takes all of that as its starting point. Set within a private woodland in West Penwith, one of the most stone-rich corners of Britain, with quoits, menhirs, fogous and ancient monuments within easy reach, we'll spend five days writing and thinking together. We'll visit some of these places. We'll write near them, about them, or simply alongside them. The sessions are open to writers at any stage, working in any form. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or something harder to name. Wyl's work has always moved between the page and the landscape, and this retreat follows the same instinct: that close attention to the natural world, to the specific weight and texture of a place, is one of the most useful things a writer can do. This retreat will appeal to anyone drawn to nature writing and landscape writing, and to anyone who has ever stood in front of something ancient, or vast, or quietly ordinary, and felt the pull of it. In 2026, he was awarded the Blue Metropolis Planet Literature Prize, given for a body of work that demonstrates the beauty and fragility of the living world and promotes greater ecological awareness. A former journalist, Wyl has written for Radio 4, The Guardian and The Observer. He is a senior lecturer in creative writing at Falmouth University and a regular tutor for Arvon Foundation and Curtis Brown Creative. Born in Stockport in 1979, Wyl now lives in Cornwall with his wife and two children. During this workshop, we'll use reel-to-reel tape machines as both musical instruments and tools for composition. Paul will guide us through the fundamentals of tape recording, splicing, and looping, as well as advanced experimental techniques of tape delay and manipulation. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with layering, degradation, and texture, discovering how the physicality of tape can inspire entirely new approaches to sound. By focusing on creating outside of the DAW and working directly with objects instead of screens, we'll embrace a process that celebrates the heart and soul of analog equipment. Our creative journey will include collaborative sessions where we'll craft unique tape-based compositions, drawing inspiration from the natural elements around us. Field recording outings will offer an opportunity to capture environmental sounds, which we'll manipulate and integrate into our works. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments or sound sources (compact and portable), and Paul will provide several reel-to-reel machines and custom tools for experimentation. Throughout the week, we'll reflect on the innovative techniques pioneered by artists such as Steve Reich, Delia Derbyshire, Brian Eno, and Éliane Radigue, exploring how analog tape can connect us to a slower, more deliberate process of creation. By the end of the residency, you will gain hands-on experience with tape-based composition and discover new methods of sound design. You'll leave with a collaborative collection of tape-driven works, including personal tape loops that serve as mementos of the creative journey and the beginnings of a shared tape loop archive. It's missing clarity about what it is, what it needs, and how to get it there. The centre of this residency is Sam working live on participant tracks inside his purpose-built Dolby Atmos studio in Zennor, Cornwall, making decisions in real time, explaining the thinking behind each move, with the group listening and learning as it happens. Your music, or someone else's, is on the monitors, being worked on by an experienced mixing engineer with credits spanning major contemporary music and film projects. Participants are invited to bring works in progress, unfinished tracks, demos, sketches or stalled projects and use the week as a focused space to better understand what their music needs, emotionally, technically, and sonically. Through listening sessions, live demonstration, and open group discussion, the week explores EQ, compression, dynamics, spatial mixing, depth, balance and arrangement, and how these choices shape the emotional impact and real world translation of a track, from studio monitors to headphones and everyday listening environments. Equal weight is placed on technical process and creative perception. Alongside studio sessions, participants explore how to listen more critically, identify what a track is missing, and make decisions without losing the original intent of the music. Conversation throughout the week also addresses workflow, creative block, overworking mixes, momentum, and developing trust in your own listening. This often reveals new directions in the work that are not visible when working alone. With a small group of around ten participants, the residency is designed to feel intimate, open, and responsive, with space for questions, experimentation, and detailed feedback. Not every track will be mixed in full, but multiple works in progress will be explored live, giving everyone the opportunity to learn through observation and shared critical listening. Who this is for This residency is for producers, musicians, and composers who have music sitting unfinished: tracks that feel close but not quite there, or projects where the mix is getting in the way of the music. You don't need to be working professionally. You need to have something worth finishing and a genuine interest in understanding why it isn't done yet. What the week involves Sam works directly on selected participant tracks in real time, demonstrating approaches to EQ, compression, dynamics, balance, spatial processing and mix development, while explaining the decisions behind each move, so you understand not just what is happening but why it works. Participants share works in progress and receive focused feedback on tone, arrangement, translation, emotional impact and clarity in the mix, including how the music behaves outside the studio environment. Radio is a kind of invisible weather, a drifting archive of voices, music, static and signal that passes constantly through us. It is global, nostalgic, unpredictable and alive. In this residency, we'll be working at Housel Bay on the Lizard Peninsula, a place deeply connected to the earliest days of broadcast history. This is where radio began, where Marconi's first transmissions crossed the sea and changed the way sound could travel. A century later, we will tune in to the same air and use it to create music. Radio Music is a hands-on residency for musicians and soundmakers of all kinds. Whether you are writing songs, working with synthesisers, collecting field recordings or making abstract sound pieces, this is an opportunity to explore radio as both a source of sound and a creative method, a way of listening, composing and collaborating that invites surprise and unpredictability. You will listen to live broadcasts and archival recordings, picking up fragments of music, speech, noise and silence, then use those discoveries to shape new pieces, individually and in collaboration with others. Friday evening opens with a guided demo from Mylar Melodies, offering insight into how he approaches sound, structure and play within a modular system. Generate the score: A simple computer script creates a pseudorandom set of marks, track names, and coded descriptions. 2. Draw the score: A computer-controlled pen plotter draws these shapes onto maps of Toronto Island surrounding the Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts. Participants adapt their scores as they see fit. 3: Interpret the score – Individuals and small ensembles explore a wide range of musical techniques, including field recordings, singing, tape loops, modular synths, and other instruments, using the island’s sound world as inspiration. These compositions were created during the Dyski Sound Maps residency at Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts, Toronto Island, 2–6 March 2026. Scores were generated by a 200-line Python script and realised via an AxiDraw plotter. Sound sources include the Music Thing Modular Workshop System, a portable modular synthesiser, and the diverse sonic environment of the island itself. Sine Wave Portraits “You’re only allowed one sine wave and the volume knob. Use that to draw a picture” 1: Each participant draws a 60 second blind contour pencil sketch of three other participants, inspired by Kimon Nicolaïdes ‘The Natural Way to Draw’. They don’t look at the paper while drawing, and turn the paper over when they’ve finished. 2: Sketches are shuffled, and each participant is given one sketch. They don’t know who drew it, or who it represents. 3: Participants use a sine wave generator to re-create the sketch as audio, limited to just frequency and volume. They do this several times, listening back each time. 4. They can layer multiple recordings to create a more intricate representation. 5. No effects or other sound sources can be used. The only sound source is the hand-controlled sine wave generator on a Music Thing Modular Workshop System, a portable modular synthesiser. Bandcamp link:Album 1. Sound Maps “Make an album in a week with a computer-generated Graphic Score and a tiny modular synth” 1: A simple computer script creates a pseudorandom set of marks and shapes, and generates track names and coded descriptions. 2: A computer-controlled pen plotter draws these shapes onto a map of the Helford River Estuary surrounding the residency site. 3. Individuals and small ensembles can use a wide range of musical techniques to interpret these scores, including field recordings, singing, tape loops, modular synths and hand-made instruments. 4: They work outside the studio, recording in locations specified by the score. 5: They have just over 24 hours to record up to six tracks per ensemble. These compositions were recorded at the Dyski Sound Maps residency at Calamansac in Cornwall, 13-18 April 2024. Scores are generated by a 200-line Python script and drawn on an AxiDraw plotter. Sound sources include the Music Thing Modular Workshop System, a portable modular synthesiser.
